1101 abbey founded.
1792 Revolutionary order to close all monasteries.
1804 opened as a prison.
1963 prison closed.

Description

The Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud is an extraordinary abbey of impressive size. It is one of the largest historic monastic sites in Europe. It was a double monastery, with a nuns and monks. The monastery has huge underground cellars which are part of the self guided tour.
