The Les Caves de La Genevraie is an underground restaurant, locally called restaurant troglodytique.
It is located only 100 m from the
Village Troglodytique Rochemenier,
a famous museum of the local underground houses, on the Rue du Musée.
The caves were created as underground quarries and used for various purposes since then.
Once during the religious wars they were even a refuge.
Today the caves contain an underground restaurant.
The local specialty fouaces is served at the restaurant. These are small breads cooked in a wood fire, served with a unique aperitif menu, wine and coffee included.
A restaurant is obviously open for the public, nevertheless it is not tourist site. Please do not just walk in, that’s impolite, we recommend to become a guest by consuming some food or drink. So it is easy to visit it at the price of a cup of coffee.
L’Ammonite is also an underground restaurant and bar, located just across the Rue du Musée. It is a partner restaurant and has the same open hours.
