History

1827 founded by Georges Hermann Mumm.
1876 Georges Hermann Mumm designs the red ribbon on the bottle.

Description

The general visit is called Cordon Rouge Experience and includes a 10 minutes film and a visit to the cellars. It is named after the G.H. Mumm Cordon Rouge, the House’s signature champagne. Obviously it also includes the tasting of this champagne, at least for those of legal age. You will learn how Georges Hermann Mumm, an ambitious, visionary entrepreneur, led Mumm during the 19th century. In 1876, he designed the red ribbon on the bottle, which was intended as a worldwide symbol of quality.

As far as we understand there is only one tour, the difference in price and name are only reflecting the wine which is tasted afterwards. At the Grand Cru Experience there are two exceptional champagnes of the 100% Grand Cru Mumm RSRV collection, and at the Discovery Experience the tasting of Mumm Millésimé, "a complex wine embodying Mumm’s know-how and excellence", is included. We understand, that the tours are actually the cheap part and most of the price is the cost of the champagne. Considering that we first listed the site in 2007, 15 years ago, we are quite baffled by the fact that the price quadrupled in this time. Also, children now cost a fee. If you are not especially interested in tasting the Mumm champagne you might consider visiting any other of the dozen or so champagne producers at Reims offering cellar tours. We could not find a single reason to justify the extreme price.

The G.H. Mumm Caveau or cellar is available for receptions and meetings. It has 270 m² and seats up to 180 guests, up to 280 on cocktail receptions. It was lately renamed R. Lalou Cellar, they do not give a reason on their website though.

The cellar was dug into the chalk below the city Reims, which took about 70 years as it was continually enlarged to accommodate the needs of the growing company. Today it has a total length of 25 km.
