La Sablière or Les Troglos de la Sablière was the cellar of the rose oil distillery when we first listed the site. Now it is an underground art exhibition, sculptures and reliefs chiseled from the white limestone of the area. It’s also a sort of museum explaining the history of the cellars and showing fossils which were found during the excavation of sand. However, the roses are not just part of the name, the connection with the rose oil distillery is close and there is a combined ticket available.
The distillery produces and sells rose oil, which is distilled from rose leaves. This is an ancient method of producing perfume manually, in old distills fired by wood. Today such things are made by multinational companies in sterile factories. The distillery located in the centre of Doué la Fontaine offers touristic visits to their cellars, where the rose oil is produced. The open hours are those of the underground tours, the show is open all year, like any shop, but durig winter only on weekdays and there are no tours.
