Σπήλαιο Γρούσπα (Grouspa Cave) is located close to the village Razata. The cave is a semi-wild cave, rather small and easy to access and visit. Also, it is rich in speleothems and rather easy to visit. As common at caves on Kefalonia the entrance is a collapse doline with vertical walls and a diameter of 10 m. To make access possible a galvanised iron ladder is attached to the side wall, sure-footedness is a prerequisite, we also recommend a simple safety device.
The cave has a vertical range of 24 m, most of it is managed by descending the iron ladder. The slope of the debris, which is covered by vegetation, ferns and fig trees (Ficus carica), leads down to the single chamber on one side of the doline. The rest of the cave is more or less horizontal. It is home to numerous bats, seven species are documented. As a result, the cave has deposits of bat guano.
The site is rather famous, but not for the cave, the important site is nearby Krani, an ancient city of which only the Cyclopean Walls remain. And while the walls are quite spectacular, they are not easy to reach and its necessary to walk some distance, so they are not very popular. Follow highway 50 through Razata, both the geosite and the walls are signposted. Follow this road as far as you dare, at the Prophet Elias Church pavement ends, but its allowed to drive the single lane gravel road.
Grouspa Cave is Geosite No 24 of the
Kefalonia-Ithaca UNESCO Global Geopark.
