Μουσείο Οίνου Κουτσογιαννόπουλος (Koutsogiannopoulos Wine Museum) is a former winery which intends to sell wines. It does so quite spectacular with an underground wine growing museum. The Koutsogiannopoulos family has been wine growers since generations, and they collected wine related tools and machinery, which is presented in a huge museum. It took 21 years of work to complete the wine museum.
Wooden presses and tools from the 17th century are the oldest part of the exhibition. The winemaking process is explained in detail from ploughing in the vineyards, through harvesting, stomping, and weighing of the grapes, to the aging and finally bottling. The development of the used machinery over centuries is explained. Much of the exhibited machinery was actually used by past generations of Koutsogiannopoulos winemakers. The museum is quite spacious and completely underground, in total it extends over 300 m of former wine cellars. And as always, the tour ends with a wine tasting. Depending on the number of wines, the prices vary greatly, however, the more expensive tastings not only offer more wines, but also wines of much better quality.
This is as far as we know, the most interesting and most professional wine tour on the island. The exhibition is huge, and visitors get audioguides in 14 languages, the guidebook is available in 22 languages. It is, as always in Greece, known under different names. In use are despite the above name Υπόσκαφο Μουσείο Οίνου (Underground Wine Museum) and Οινοποιείο Κουτσογιαννόπουλος Γεώργιος (Winery George Koutsogiannopoulos). Located in the middle of the island, it is a little off the beaten track. Nevertheless, it is frequented by tourists.
