History

Description

El Boquerón is a river cave, so it is recommended to visit it during dry season. However, a visit during rainy season is possible but more strenuous and more dangerous. The cave trekking trip is organized by at least two different organizations which are located at Copán. It takes an hour to get to the cave, which includes a car ride, some walking and a little climbing.

The cave is not really difficult, but physical fitness and good shoes are much recommended. The cave is wet and sometimes one has to wade through the cave river. The cave may be visited to the point where it ends at a sump.

Legend tells that there is a secret underground passage through this cave to Guatemala and the north coast, which was used by the ancient Maya.
