Description

Labirinto Casilino (Casilino Maze) is like most underground sites in Rome a tour offered by the Associazione Culturale Roma Sotterranea. It is best booked on their website, which offers numerous tours in sites all over Rome. The special thing with this tour, is that it is a newly added underground site which is located below the Villa De Sanctis. The forme quarry has huge tunnels, they were created to mine rocks for all kinds of buildings. Actually, this underground quarry is part of a 100 km long network of quarries.

The quarries were quarrying pozzolana, a volcanic tufa which has ideal properties for building. It's been quarried since Roman times, but underground quarrying ended in the early 20th century. The new mechanisation changed the techniques and quarrying moved to open cast sites further away, which became possible through new means of transportation. The abandoned quarries were not really practical, but there were some uses. The most important was mushroom farms, enormous sites dedicated to the cultivation of champignons. When they ended the production, the left the bags with earth and mycelium.

For the tour a mask, sportswear, hiking shoes and a torch are required. Helmets are provided, we strongly recommend a headlamp, if you have helmet with headlamp, you may bring your own. The meeting point is the car park of the restaurant "Casale di Nonno Gino".
