Napoli sotterranea (Naples Underground) is quite complicated, because it is actually two non-profit associations offering tours into various underground sites of Naples. That’s the reason why we have linked two websites below. In a way it is not a site, it is a number of sites which may be visited.
The association Napoli sotterranea is the older one, originating from cavers who did early urban exploration since the 1960s and started public tours in the 1970s. Their tour shows the Greek-Roman Theater, the War Museum, the Co.R.E. Gallery, Tuffelo Wine and the Hypogeum. Starting point for the tour is Piazza San Gaetano, tours are offered in Italian and English. The Greek-Roman Theater or Teatro di Nerone (Theater of Nerone) was incorporated into the houses in Via Anticaglia, Vico Cinquesanti and Via S. Paolo when they were built in the 15th century. The War Museum is dedicated to World War II, when some 40,000 inhabitants of Naple lived underground, because they feared air raids. After the war the bombed buildings were remove by filling the material in the ancient wells, where the rocks were once quarried. The Co.R.E. Gallery is a contemporary art gallery located underground. The Tufello wine cellar shows how the ancient underground structures were used for storing wine since Italy was colonized by the Greek. They brought the grapes to Italy and founded the Italian wine tradition. And finally the Hypogeum Gardens are underground gardens which are a result of the Expo 2015, 35 m below the surface, plants are protected from various factors: acid rain, smog and fine dust. But of course artificial light is required for them to grow.
The Libera Associazione Escursionisti Sottosuolo (LAES, Free Association of Underground Explorers) was founded in 1988 by some cavers. The tour starts in the Spanish quarters at the Bar Gambrinus The sites include cisterns, sewers, pipelines, and World War II air raid shelters.
