History

Description

The Mitreo delle Terme del Mitra is a mithraeum located under the Terme del Mitra in Ostia Antica, the ancient harbour of the city Rome. It could be reached through a staircase from the ground level. This is probably the biggest mithraeum which is known. The state of the walls is unfortunately very bad, the original wall paintings are mostly destroyed. The tauroctony is a huge sculpture, 1.7 m high, which is made of Greek marble. There is an inscription, which tells it was made by Kriton from Athens. It is dated to the 2nd century.
