History

Description

中津渓谷 (Nakatsu Gorge) is the gorge of Nakatsu River, a tributary to Niyodo River. The most famous thing about the gorge is probably the blue colour of the water, which is called Niyodo Blue. The gorge is developed by a 2.3 km path, which follows the riverside. Built of concrete, iron and wood it crosses the river numerous time, even on stepping stone. Most of the time the trail is high above the river, so it is not destroyed during time of high water. The trail ends at the 20 m high Uryu no Taki waterfall. A round trip from the entrance of the gorge to the stone pillars at Uryu Falls takes about two hours. Quite unusual for gorges, it is accessible all year. But it is particularly popular during summer, and in autumn, when the leaves turn red and orange.

Along the trail seven stone statues are placed, which are not very easy to see. They show the shichifukujin (Seven Gods of Fortune).
