Description
高千穂峡 (Takachiho Gorge) is quite exceptional, as the walls consist of basalt pillars with numerous caves. The basalt was produced by two volcanic eruptions from nearby Mount Aso over 120,000 years ago. The best way to see the gorge is by boat, there is a small harbour were you can rent a boat.
