28-FEB-1933 | declared a Natural Monument. |
七折鍾乳洞 (Nanaori syounyudo, Nanaori Limestone Cave) is a Natural Monument. The cave is a former show cave, and once had a trail, but it was a rough one with uneven steps, many stairs, and even iron ladders. It is noted for numerous speleothems, mostly stalagmite and stalactites, but also for unique calcite crystals, which seems to be a sort of misunderstanding which became a nonsensical empty phrase which is retold again and again. There are needle-like calcite crystals which are definitely interesting, but not as spectacular as described. The cave is closed with a gate, which is good, as it is definitely not suitable for non cavers. Tours for groups are possible after appointment, contact the Board of Education. However, the cave is 45 m deep, with a length of 140 m, which means the floor of the cave is steep as a roof, and most trails and ladders are gone or unstable.
