History

19-MAR-1975 second tunnel discovered.

Description

제2땅굴 (2nd Infiltration Tunnel) is 3.5 km long, 2.4 km on North Korean side and 1.1 km on South Korean side. With a height of 2.4 m and a width of 2 m it would have allowed 30,000 heavily armed troops per hour. A South Korean military watchman heard an explosion underground while on guard and became suspicious.

The 2nd Tunnel was closed for tourists for many years, but is now again open for special tours. Unlike the others it is visited by foot. It is entered down a steep tunnel with a long staircase, which was built by the South Koreans to get to the tunnel.

As far as we understand the tunnels 2, 3 and 4 are equipped for public tours. On one hand there are comments on the web which say that one tunnel is the only one which is open to the public, on the other hand there are blog posts of visits for all three. As far as we understand, tunnel 3 is visited by full day and half day trips from Seoul. Tunnel 2 is open only for special tours, and probably only for South Koreans. Tunnel 4 is open for individual South Koreans and for foreigners on tours.
