History


Description

The මාතලේ අළුවිහාරය (Aluvihare Rock Temple) or also called Matale Alu Viharaya, as it is located in Matale. The site is quite spectacular as it is a huge boulder with a flat top on which a golden Buddha was built, and a rim along the foot into which the cave temple was built. This cave monastery has religious paintings and stupas, and is visited by both Buddhists and Hindus.

According to legend the three rocks were used by a giant as a base for his dish pot. The ashes of the cooking fire where the reason why it was named Aluvihare which means (Ash Monastery.
