History

29-NOV-1999	declared a Natural Monument by the Council of the Municipality of Vevcani.
2012	declared a Natural Monument by the Parliament of the Republic of Macedonia.
22-MAR-2024	permanent exhibition opened in the Multicultural Center "Kosta Srbakoski".

Description

Вевчански Извори/Vevčanski Izvori (Springs of Vevchani) are a series of karst springs located northwest of Vevčani on the eastern slopes of the Jablanica mountain. The nature monument covers an area of 13.7 km², which includes much of the catchment area. The main spring is actually a cave entrance and dries up during summer, it is only active during times of high production. Below are several permanent springs. This is a typical situation, where a new level of cave forms in the groundwater, while the older level above falls dry. For some time the old level is reactivated until finally the newer level is big enough to swallow the water completely.

The site is located at the western end of the village, there is a restaurant with beergarden and numerous trails and bridges across the circular springs. The restaurant is named Ресторан Во Извор or Restoran Vo Izvor (Restaurant at the Spring). It is right at the entrance to the small spring area. The tails are paved, and there are numerous wooden tables and benches for a picnic. The place is well maintained and frequented mostly by locals.

A permanent exhibition about the geology and the biology of the nature preserve can be visited at the Мултикултурен Центар “Коста Србакоски” (Multicultural Center "Kosta Srbakoski") in Vevcani. The permanent display was created by Еко-свест (Eco-awareness) as part of the project "Поддршка на одржливо управување со Споменикот на природа Вевчански Извори" (Supporting the sustainable management of the nature monument Vevčanski Izvori). It was financed by the Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust (PONT).
