Għar ta’ Karolina (Carolina Grotto, Caroline’s Cave) is located on the northern shore of Xlendi Bay. This place is actually riddled with caves, however, the other two listed sites are artificial. The northern side of the harbour is formed by a limestone cliff, and a huge but shallow sea cave can be seen from the harbour. But that is not the cave we are talking about here. To reach Caroline’s Cave, some walking is required. Starting point is at the Ta’ Karolina restaurant, and as the restaurant uses the road for its café, its actually necessary to walk through the café first. Actually there are also The Boathouse and The Stone Crab, and you have to cross all three restaurants or use the other road. A long staircase leads up the cliff in zigzag, a trail above the cliff lead west and finally descends, then a tunnel with a staircase leads down into a sea cave.
This cave was once owned by a wealthy woman from Victoria, Caroline Cauchi, and was named after her. She was the founder of the Order of Augustinian Sisters, and she donated a piece of land including the cave. Because the cave was only accessible by steps along a rocky cliff and there was a natural sheltered rock pool, the sisters used the cave to take sea baths without fear of being seen.
