History

Description

Pozo del Gavilán (Gavilan Pothole) is a collapse doline or pothole with water at the bottom. Although it is not a cenote like those on the Yucata peninsula, this is mexico and so many people call it a cenote. You could also call it a well or spring. We decided to stay with the classical term doline.

While the size is quite impressive, it's not big enough for a tiankeng. The diameter of the depression is about 90 m, almost circular, the shaft is a little smallerm 67 m in diameter with vertical walls, and the water level is 82 m deep. The lake at the bottom is 30 m deep. The cavern widens inside again, it's more like a bell than a shaft.

While freely accessible the site is developed for tourists. There is a road, a parking lot and a fence for security. There is a normal outlook for the average tourist. The company Aventureros Extremos En Serio also offers abseiling into the pothole and kayaking on the lake below. Abseiling is not that difficult, but climbing back to the surface with single rope technique is not easy and requires physical fitness, so this is actually not for the average tourist.
