History

Description

There are actually three caves, the Grutas de la Catedral (Cathedral Cave), Grutas del Ángel (Angel Cave) and Grutas de los Cristales (Crystal Cave). The caves are rather new show caves and hard to reach, there is no public transport and the last part of the road is a dirt road. Thats normally not a problem, but on rainy days you may have a problem with small cars. You should also avoid the easter Holidays because it is very crowded.

The Grutas de la Catedral is a developed show cave with trails and electric light. The cave is more or less a huge chamber, and it was named cathedral because its shape resembles a cathedral- This chamber has a hole in the ceiling through which a beam of light enters the cave for some hours around noon. On the left side there is a descent to a lower section with three chambers and a cave river.

The Grutas del Ángel and the Grutas de los Cristales are only a few hundred meters from the Grutas de la Catedral. Both are not developed and require caving and climbing gear for a visit. They can be visited on cave trekking tours. El Ángel was named after a rock in the entrance section which seems to have wings and thus resembles an angel. Grutas de los Cristales is said to be the more interesting cave trip if you have only time for one.

There is a general entrance fee for the park, but no fees for the cave tours. However, if you hire a guide or do a cave trekking tour there are extra costs.
