Description

Bergtatt Opplevelser (Bergtatt Experiences) is a tour through an underground marble quarry which is still in operation. The huge chambers were the marble has been quarried are used for various purposes, which includes underground concerts, an underground boat ride, and an underground mining museum. The family run marble mine produces marble for the paper industry in Norway and Sweden. Since 1987 the mining is underground.

The whole tour is quite unusual, and that’s from the beginning. Normal tours start at road 64 right below the mine. There is a parking lot marked by a sort of gravestone or crypt with a roof built of marble from the mine. Actually it is the post box and has an information board about the mine and the tours. Here the visitors enter a coach and drive into the mine, the entrance tunnel is quite huge and the coach ride ends in a huge hall with two chandeliers. Visitors are equipped with life vests for the underground boat rides, and helmets, which are mandatory in all mines. Then a short video aboput marble mining and the geology is shown. They offer a glas of water which is collected in the mine and has been filtered by the marble. Then the concert hall with space for 300 people is visited. This chamber is actually heated and has 22 °C. At the side is a bar with a display of old miner lamps.

The marble in the area is mined for various purposes, but in this mine it is only mined for the production of high quality glossy paper. It seems the digital editions of magazines reduce the amout of paper which is needed continually. There is most likely no need for the marble in the future. However, marble could also be used for tiles, slabs, building stone, also for industrial processes and much more. There is another marble quarry to the north, Visnes Kalk, but it’s not possible to visit this site.

The tours are offered during summer, but its necessary to reserve a ticket either through online booking or by SMS. There is only one tour daily. There is also the possiblility to combine the tour with a coach ride along the coast, see their website for more info.
