Palm Jumeirah is an artificial island about five kilometers in diameter, covering an area of 600 hectares. It looks like a huge palm with almost two kilometers long leaves, hence the name. The palm is surrounded by a second island, almost circular, which is intended to shelter the palm from the forces of the sea. The palm actually sits in the middle of its own huge laguna. The Palm Jumeirah Underpass is an 1.4 km long subsea road tunnel which connects the spine of the palm island to the outer crescent.
