History

2010 explored by the cavers of the ECA Group from Lima.

Description

Cueva del Diamante is a horizontal cave which is thus easy to visit. It seems it is actually considered a tourist site and is listed as a tourist attraction, but there is actually no development at all, and as far as we understand also no tours. The only "development" is a gate at the cave entrance, probably a result of the fact that it is located in Bosque de Protección del Alto Mayo, a protected area. Intended to protect the cave it is completely useless as it possible to enter the cave though a gap beneath the locked gate. The results are nasty graffiti inside. The cave is frequently visited and worn down.

Cueva del Diamante is a 300 m long passage in a limestone mound east of Rio Naranjos. It is a former river cave and contains gravel which was deposited by the river, which is not limestone. This shows that the river originated from a catchment area which is not karstified. When the limestone was reached the river vanished underground. Most likely this river was the nearby Rio Naranjos, before it cut deeper. The cave is located in the Diamante hamlet, hence the name.
