History

2007 Caverna de Leo discovered and first explored.
2014 Private Conservation Area (ACP) recognized by the Ministry of the Environment of Peru.

Description

Caverna de Leo is owned by Don Leuvigildo López Gongora, and due to its importance he created the Área de Conservación Privada Cavernas de Leo (Leo Caverns Private Conservation Area). The protected area covers the known extension of the cave system and has a size of 12.5 ha. They offer easy cave trekking tours into the cave, guided by the owner himself or his son, May Stip Lopez. By the way, Leuvigildo is a little difficult, so everyone calls him Leo. That's how the cave got its name.

The cave was discovered by Don Leuvigildo López in 2007 during road works. This happened frequently, and as always he entered the new discovery a few days later with appropriate caving equipment. But unlike the other times, the cave seemed tzo go on and on, and he became aware that he had discovered an exceptional cave. The cave was explored and surveyed by French cavers
