History

Description

Peștera Coiba Mare (Small Coiba Cave) has the largest cave portal in Romania, its size can only be compared to the portal of Cetatilor Ponorului (Ponor Fortress). It is accessible all year long, except during rainy periods as the portal is the sink of the Gărdișoara river. At low and normal production of the Izbucul de la Coibița spring the portal is dry, the water vanishes before it reaches the cave in cracks in the riverbed. It flows through a lower level and springs in the small karst spring Izbucul Tăuzului about 2.5 km down the valley. But during high yield this lower level is not sufficient and the water overflows. If you are inside the cave there is the danger to get trapped.

Actually the cave is only for cavers, you should not venture inside without having caving skills and being well-prepared. But the massive cave portal and the first 50 m which are level easily visited, are well worth a visit. Also, the cave is along the trail to the ice cave Peștera Ghețarul de la Vârtop.
