History

Description

Сесалачка пећина or Sesalačka Pećina (Sesalac Cave) was named after the nearby village Sesalac. It is partly a river cave, the river Зарвина or Zarvina flows through the cave on a length of about 50 m. Beneath this through-cave there is a 500 m long horizontal passage which may be visited. The first 200 m are developed with electric light, there is a switch, and visitors can turn on the light by pressing the switch. It's also possible to venture deeper if you bring your own light. There are no trails though, the cave has a mostly level dirt floor, with a sort of footpath.

According to local lore, the cave was used by bandits as a hideout. Also, the hajduks, some say they were freedom fighters against the Turk oppression, others say they were terrorists, are said to have hidden in the cave. The locals call the cave Pećara, which is just another word for cave.

In front of the cave is a picnic area, a restaurant and a campground. The site is advertised as a tourist spot, but actually the cave development with the lack of a gate and the lack of railings to restrict the walking to a certain area, is in great danger. Fortunately, the site is so remote that few tourists actually go there. The site is today part of a nature reserve of the same name, but the declaration as a Natural Monument is continually delayed. Actually, all necessary work was done in 2020, but it has still not happened in 2024.
