History

Description

водопадам Руфабго (Rufabgo Waterfalls) is a gorge with numerous waterfalls, which is developed by trails and bridges. It is a side branch of the Khadzhokh gorge between Kamennomostsky and Dakhovskaya. Half way is the hotel complex Rufabgo, with a huge parking lot. The Rufabgo gorge is on the opposite side of the river, but there is an iron bridge across the river. The ticket office is on the other side of the bridge, so the bridge itself is accessible even if the gorge is closed.

The trail and the bridges are well maintained and there is normally a railing, so this walk is suitable for people of all ages. The metal railings are painted in a bright yellow which seems to be a typical Russian thing. In summer the gorge is forested and lush, but in winter there is typically snow and frozen waterfalls, so the gorge is worth a visit all year. The site is quite popular with families. If you stay at the hotel, they offer excursions into the gorge.

The gorge is a 3 km hike along the brook with numerous waterfalls up to 12 m high. It ends at the Heart of Rufabgo. According to legend the giant рыфыбг (Adyghe for obstinate, mad) lived here. When the first Cro Magnon humans reached the place the hero Khadzhokh killed him and the enormous heart of the giant became the spring of the brook. A small cave in the gorge is said to be a neolithic temple.
