History

Description

We have wrongly listed this cave under the name Kalkstensgrottor (Limestone Cave). This is not the name of the cave, but it was the name under which the tours were advertised for years. The name of the cave is actually Kvarnbäckslabyrinten. Finally, the operator showed understanding and renamed the tour ‘Cave tour in Sweden Kvarnbäckslabyrinten, Åre’. Now we had a problem because our page had the wrong name, and we had to rename it. There was another cave tour named Mettjeburretjakke which was quite demanding and required climbing and abseiling. That’s probably the reason why it was discontinued.

The tour definitely requires physical fitness and is suitable only for trained people with some ability to climb. The tour includes a lengthy walk to the cave and the cave tour itself and takes about six hours. Several close, but not connected caves are visited, and there is also an abandoned mine from the 17th century.

This is a guided cave trekking tour by a local extreme sports organizer. The operator provides cave overall, headlamp, and helmet. Also transport from the meeting point to the cave, but there is an 30 minutes easy walk to the cave over mostly open marsh. Bring a backpack, sturdy shoes or rubber boots, gloves, lunch, warm underwear, change of clothes, towel and a plastic bag for the dirty clothes. If you have you may bring your own caving equipment.

It seems there is now a second operator offering tours to the cave. Explore Åre is specialized on conferences, corporate events and all kind of parties. It seems caving is in the category "team building". We are not sure if they actually do the tours themselves or if they are just reseller for JoPe tours.
