1689 | map published by Johann Weichard von Valvasor. |
Podpeška Jama (Cave of Podpeč) is located in the middle of the small village Podpeč, hence teh name. The village is located in the Dobrepolje, on the western rim. Right behind the last houses the limestone rock rises and the cave entrance opens. The cave has some historic importance due to the fact that Johann Weichard von Valvasor published a map of the cave in his book Die Ehre Deß Hertzogthums Crain in 1689. It was the first cave plan in Slovenia and one of the first cave plans in Europe.
The small cave has a huge portal, but ends after a few meters. It is very easy to visit, the entrance section is paved. There is also a bench to enjoy the shadow of the cliff during the summer heat.
