History

Description

The Ilgarini Mağarası is a huge cave on the karst plateau above Sümenler. It is mostly easy to visit as it has a flat floor. Located in Küre Mountains National Park there is a trail to three caves, Mantarlı Cave, Ejder Cave, a vertical cave, and finally Ilgarini Cave. The trail was equipped by the Küre Mountains National Park Directorate with signs, educative plates and benches. On difficult sections there are railings and stairs.

At the entrance to Ilgarini Mağarası there are the ruins of an ancient village, which is dated to the Byzantine Period. Remains in the cave were up to 2,000 years old. The passage to the right has a huge chamber named Avizeli Salon (Hall with Chandelier). On the left the passage leads downwards and there are stone steps. After 250 m the bottom is reached, a level sections were the remains of a chapel and seven tombs can be seen.
