History

MAY-2007 development for tourism started.

Description

Çukurören Yeraltı Şehri is a sort of hoax. It seems the mayor of the small town Gülpınar was quite impressed by the discovery of an underground city in the town. Obviously he expected tourism and money. So he published an announcement that the underground city would be opened to the public quite soon, works on its development were under way. Numerous websites and official lists of underground cities in the area listed the place using the description given by the mayor. Its now 2020 and a web search revealed only the original newspaper article from 2007 and those listings, which repeated the same info. It seems the development was never completed and the site was never opened to the public.

Çukurören is said to be the largest underground city in Cappadocia in central Anatolia. The whole complex is said to have eight levels, with water flowing through the third and fourth level. The second level which has a wine press, food stores, living spaces, a church, and wells was intended for development. The current state of the development is unknown.
