Kepez Yeraltı Şehri (Kepez Underground City) is located in the village Kepez and named after this village. Unique is the fact that the rocks have two different colours, many passages and rooms have red walls and a white ceiling. This is considered the most beautiful and largest of the underground cities. The architecture is less irregular, rectangular halls arranged in groups of three, and galleries and tunnels connecting these halls. This is probably a result of a planned construction of the structure instead of being dug as needed. It is also quite unique as it is not locáted below the modern village but on the top of a nearby hill. This is most likely because the rock rather hard Paleozoic metamorphic rock, while the hill consists of soft volcanosedimentary rocks. The Kepez Underground City was excavated within the Kızılöz Formation, an Oligo-Miocene formation of conglomerate, sandstone, claystone, and siltstone with fluvial facies.
This city has 14 entrances on all sides of the hill. Each is closed by a huge circular rock, which is rolled to close the passage.
But the site is quite unknown and there are no regular open hours. The key is available from the major of the village. Contact data is posted at the door of the underground city. Obviously he has other work to do and there is the possibility that is not available.
