History

Description

The Great Chamber is a huge cave portal which faces south. This shelter is actually named Cutler Cove, as it is located in Cutler Point (2,053 m asl), about 15 km north of Kanab. However, it seems to be known under the name Great Chamber, and is quite famous on instagram. It's located a few kilometers west of the Grand Staircaseā€“Escalante National Monument, but is not inside the monument. Cutler Point is a sandstone cliff, which has this huge shelter. The entrance contains a hill of white sand, and the smooth sandstone arch has an interesting structure. As it faces south there are numerous spectacular photographs on the web which show the milky way surrounded by the sandstone arch of the cave.

There is a dirt road BLM 103 which leads to the Cutler Point Parking, which is also just a patch of gravel and sand. To get there requires a 4WD with high clearance and a good map. There are also operators in Kanab which offer tours to the cave, and we strongly recommend such tours as it is rather difficult to find the site. From the car park it's a 400 m/10 minutes walk uphill to the cave. Although the cave is freely accessible all year, the summers are quite hot, and we recommend a hat and sun protection, while in winter there might be snow. Spring or fall are the best times for visiting the Great Chamber. The accessibility of the road strongly depends on the weather, another good reason for a guided tour.

If you actually want to go there on your own, head north on Highway 89, turn right at the Sand Caves Parking into Kanab Canyon. After 4.6 km a single lane road turns off to the right marked 100, after 8 km turn left on 1037 km to the car park. Bring enough water!
