The low grade porphyry copper
Bagdad Mine is a working open cast copper mine. It was named after a mining claim, but the modern mine is actually the unification of five different mines. The mine is pretty small, only 2.75 kilometers long and 350 m deep, there are numerous bigger holes in the area. It is owned and operated by Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc, the worlds largest publicly traded copper company. They also own the bigger Morenci Mine and others. Bagdad was the first mine were they used their proprietary SX-EW process, a sort of small scale experiment.
