History

1917 first ton of coal produced by Beulah Coal Company in underground mining.
1945 MDU Resources Group, Inc. acquired Knife River.
1950 underground mining discontinued, lignite production increased dramatically by larger surface mining equipment.
1950s mine at Gascoyne, North Dakota, puchsed and a third operation near Sidney, Montana, opened.
1970s Beulah and Gascoyne mines expanded.
2001 Knife River sold its coal mining operations.

Description

Knife River Coal Mine was one of the largest underground mines in North Dakota. Between 1917 and 1950 over 10 million tons of coal were mined.
