1971-1973 | cave used by General Vo Nguyen Giap. |
Hang Cha Loi (Cha Loi Cave) is a cave trekking tour which is offered by various cave trekking operators. The cave tours are sold at Phong Nha Park, but the cave is actually not located at the park, it is further south, 40 km south-east of Dong Hoi. However, the name Cha Loi is new, it was given to the cave for the tours. The Van Kieu minority people in the nearby Ngan Thuy village named the cave Hang Đại (General Cave) or Hang Ông Giáp (Mr. Giap Cave). Between 1971 and 1973 General Vo Nguyen Giap lived in the area when he was commanding the Southern troops. He also used the cave as storage, as hideout, for secret meetings, and as resting place. The guided tour includes cave trekking, an introduction in the life of the ethnic minority Bru Van Kieu, and the visit of the cave where the military commanders gathered in the early 70s. The full-day tour includes pickup and drop off as well as a typical vietnamese dish for lunch.
