History

Description

Hang Ngọc Rồng (Dragon Pearl Cave) is quite unique, as there are dozens of show cave in the Ha Long Bay, all on island, and this cave is actually located at the harbour where all the ships start. Or one of them, there are several harbours along the coast. On the other hand, the cave is easy tor reach, and additionally it’s possible to visit the bay on one of the cruise ships which start here. Actually this is one of the combos which is offered at the cave: a day trip with a ship and dinner in the cave. And thats the real specialty of the cave, it is actually an underground event location. There is music, ballet, artistic performances and acrobatics, whilst the guests enjoy a multi-course meal featuring Vietnamese specialities. The play is called Đi tìm Dấu Ngọc (In Search of the Jade Trail) which was inspired by a well-known legend from Quang Ninh about the Sacred Dragon.

According to legend, at the dawn of Vietnamese history, the God of Heaven sent a Dragon Mother and her offspring down to Earth to help the Vietnamese people defeat invaders. Upon their arrival, the dragons spat numerous pearls into the sea, from which thousands of rocky islets formed, halting the enemy fleet. The attacking ships crashed into the rocks and were smashed to pieces. For this reason, the people named the places where the Dragon Mother and her offspring landed ‘Ha Long’ (Descending Dragon) and ‘Bai Tu Long’ (Young Dragons Caring for Their Mother). The place where the dragons churned up the water with their tails was called ‘Bach Long Vi’ (The Tail of the White Dragon).

So this is actually not a show cave, there is no guided tour at all. It is an underground restaurant with very good food, while a spectacular show happens all around the diners. The stunning stalactites and stalagmites provide the backdrop for this play.
