History

1938 archaeological excavation.

Description

Hang Tiên Ông (Tien Ong Cave) is located on Cai Tat Island, rather close to the famous Cua Van Floating Fishing Village. The entrance is quite spectacular, the portal is 50 m wide and 16 m high. The cave is quite low, only 5 m asl, so there is no need to climb many stairs to reach the entrance, it is right behind the jetty. Unfortunately this cave is quite proud of its colourful light, which makes it impossible to see the actual colour of the speleothems. This degrades natural artworks to kitschy backdrops.

The cave was excavated and archaeological remains from 10,000 BC to 8,000 BC were found. It seems Ha Long Bay was already home to people so long ago. On the cave floor and in a small exhibition, a lot of archaeological remains, such as bone tools, animal bones, and freshwater snail shells can be seen. Such an exhibition is unique in Ha Long Bay caves.

We also read the names Hang Rêu and Hang Đục, but were not able to determine if those are separate nearby caves or actually a part of Tien Ong Cave.
