The gold deposit is located in the sub-Alpine zone of the Innsbruck quartz phyllite. A 10 to 15 km wide strip from the Wipptal valley via the Zillertal valley to the Kitzbühel Alps consists of phyllitic rocks from the Ordovician, Silurian and Lower Devonian periods. Originally deposited as sediment, the rocks were metamorphosed under high pressure and temperature during mountain formation. The metals were already deposited as sediment. Later, however, the metals were redistributed and enriched during metamorphosis and by basic volcanism.
The Zillertaler Goldschaubergwerk (gold mine Zillertal) is a sort of theme park. The tour starts at the Schaukäserei (cheese production), then the mine with multimedia equipment is visited, on the way back the visitor ride a sort of train, and finally they can visit the zoo. All in all this is a fine thing for children, so it is at least half a day of entertainment for families.
Visitors have to put on protective clothing, before they go underground. In the gallery, an impressive multimedia presentation shows the life of the miners and the work underground. The social and economic environment is also a topic, as are the political conflicts surrounding the mine. The last stop is the miners’ column, where the miners thanked the Mother of God for her protection during their work.
