Description

阳明洞 (Yangming Cave) is the place where the Ming Dynasty thinker, philosopher and educator Wang Yangming studied and lectured. It is known as the most important philosophical cave in China, the origin of Yangming culture. The cave is also named East Cave. At the entrance the Ming Dynasty officer An Guoheng carved the inscriptions 阳明先生的住所 (Mr. Yang Ming's Residence) into the rock. (Yangming Cave) Numerous inscriptions are chiseled into the walls of the cave.

Wang Yangming is considered the Chinese founder of psychology, this cave is the birthplace of psychology. Wang Shouren (*26-OCT-1472, ✝09-JAN-1529), courtesy name Bo'an, was a Chinese calligrapher, military general, philosopher, politician, and writer during the Ming dynasty. He was demoted to become a magistrate of present-day Xiuwen County of Guizhou. During his tenure, he devoted himself to running a school and training literary talents. The locals adored him and beautified the cave in Longgang Mountain, 2 km east of Xiuwen County, with inscriptions. Yangming Temple was built in 1819, is at the foot of Fufeng Mountain outside the Eastern Gate of Guiyang.

Yangming Cave is located at the Longgang hill. It can easily be reached by a new built road. The hill has numerous caves, many of them are through caves. The area was cleaned from moss and bushes and transformed into a meditation place. There is a small museum in front of the cave which commemorates the life of Wang Yangming, who was born Wang Shouren. Two trees nicknamed Shouren cypresses stand just outside the museum. It is said they were planted by Wang Yangming.
