History

Description

Hoyo Soplador is a blowhole, a cave which blows water out. The name is a little dull, as it is just the Spanish translation of "blowhole". Located at the coast of the Isla de San Andrés the rock has a small sea cave, which is connected to the sea and has a small opening to the surface. When the waves and the tide are just right, it spouts seawater up to 20 meters into the air. However, the effect is rather unpredictable, wind and tides need to align properly. The waves hit the cave, and the pressure creates the effect. If the sea is calm nothing happens. If there are strong waves there might be air blowing ot of the hole. But if the waves are strong, the water is blown up to 20 m high. This happens when there is a larger wave, followed by another quickly before all water has flown back out.

The cave itself is not very big, but the blowhole is quite small, it has a diameter of about 40 cm. The coast here is an old coral reef, and thus it consists of limestone. The cave was formed by the erosion of the sea, and is thus a sea cave. Reefs grow irregular, so there were probably parts of the rock which were softer, and could not resist the waves as well as the surrounding rocks.
