The Internationale Fledermausmuseum Julianenhof (Julianenhof International Bat Museum) is located in Julianenhof, a former 19th-century estate. A fieldstone clinker stable building and the ice cellar fell into disuse after reunification, and over time bats took up residence there. After conservationists discovered eight species of bats in the empty buildings, NABU and the nature park set up an adventure, education and research centre. The ice cellar was rebuilt according to historical models, and the renovation of the roof, which was in danger of collapsing, secured the nursery roost of the greater mouse-eared bat, which is significant throughout Germany.
In addition to setting up the museum, a species conservation programme has been running since 1992 with the support of the local population to search intensively for summer and winter roosts for bats. Known roosts are secured, homeowners are advised, and structurally rich forests with a high proportion of old and dead wood are created. Bat boxes are hung up as artificial shelters for species that live in tree hollows. The former bunker facilities in Eggersdorf and Neuhardenberg have been converted into bat roosts.
The Julianenhof near Reichenberg is a former estate, built in the mid-19th century using fieldstone and brick construction. The museum consists of five sections: the stable building, the ice cellar, the bat garden, the museum garden and the historic settlers' barn. The stable building houses the reception area with the exhibition "Bats in Brandenburg" and other exhibitions. The ice cellar, with a floor area of 40 m² and a height of 5 m, could store 120 m³ of ice. In summer, visitors can view an exhibition about ice cellars in Brandenburg, while in winter it serves as a bat roost. The bat garden is intended to provide a habitat for insects and thus supply the bats with food. The renovated historic settlers' barn contains the creative workshop and an exhibition on the history of Julianenhof with a historic farm wagon from the 19th century.
