Description

Subterráneos de Toledo (Toledo’s Underground Tunnels) is not a place, it is a guided tour which visits five underground sites. That’s why its full name is actually Visita guiada por los Subterráneos de Toledo (Guided tour of the Toledo Underground). It’s also known as Ruta Toledo Subterráneo (Underground Toledo Tour). Three of them are normally closed to the public and only visited on this tour, they are marked with an asterisk in the list below. The sites are:

Mazmorras de la Posada de la Hermandad (Brotherhood Inn Dungeons)
Baños Árabes del Cenizal (Arab Baths of Cenizal)*
Termas Romanas (Roman Baths)
El Pozo del Salvador (Well of the Savior)*, a 12th century well.
Casa del Judío (House of the Jew)*

All these places were restored by the Toledo Consortium in a project named Toledo’s Unknown Heritage. The guide also explains the history of the city and the areas which are crossed when walking from one site to the next. So the tour also includes the Toledo Cathedral in the sunset and the Jewish Quarter of Toledo. There is also the Pozo Amargo, a famous well with a legend about love between a Jewish woman and a Christian man. Santo Tomé Street is full of shops and cafés and leads to the Church of Santo Tomé, where El Greco’s most famous work The Burial of the Count of Orgaz is kept.

The tour is offered all year daily except Thursday and Sunday in the evening. Visitors must make an online reservation and then go to the Pasearte Toledo office to pay for and collect the tickets. So it is recommended to collect the tickets 20 min before the tour, then walk to the meeting point at Plaza de Zocodover on the steps of Teatro de Rojas. The guide is there with an orange umbrella or flag five minutes before the start of the tour. Comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended. We also guess a headlamp is quite helpfull, although the sites have electric light. There is one drawback for international tourists though, the tours are held only in Spanish. Children have to pay the full price, toddlers up to the age of 4 are free. But you should bring a baby carrier, because strollers are not suitable with the narrow staircases.
