History

Description

Cove Cave is also known as Lower Cove, a through cave 270 m below the summit of Cove Mountain. To reach the cave some walking is necessary, and the last part including the inside of the cave is quite steep and requires easy climbing. Carrick Little Car Park on the Head Road is the best starting point, walk past Annalong wood, then follow a path on the right side which runs along the Annalong valley to the cave.

The cave has a huge portal, about 3 m wide and 10 m high, but inside the floor rises rather steep and at the far end is an openinhg which requires to crawl through. You reach a sort of pothole, and it is possible to climb up to the rim on the far side. There you stand in the middle of a cliff face, with a great view on the surrounding mountains. All in all the visit does not require a torch, although we recommend bringing one. Also climbing gear is not required but surefootedness and basic climbing skill. With the 9 km to the cave and back this visit is only for the physically fit.
