Description

The La Casa di Lucio is a cave hotel of the "diffuso" type, which means it has a reception and other infrastructure in a central house, but the rooms are spread over neighbouring cave houses. Guests have to walk, probably some staircases, and the room is actually a complete former cave house. The hotel claims to be the first of its type in Matera.

The hotel is located in the centre of the Sassi, the quarter built into the limestone cliffs around Matera. The core are two authentic cave dwellings, plus two additional storeys built above them in the 17th Century. They were renovated by the owners Lucio and Anna and converted into seven unconventional hotel rooms with private entrances and kitchenettes. The suite has a cross-vaulted ceiling and a terrace with a stunning view over the Sassi. The restaurant of the hotel is also weird, as the kitchen is completely open so that guests can observe and interact with the process. Located in a cave dwelling it serves traditional local dishes from locally grown products. It is beautifully furnished with antique furniture and the terrace has a wonderful view over the Sassi.
