Description

Nohoch Nah Chich (Giant Birdhouse) is a part of a huge underwater cave system, a cenote which is rather easily accessible. Tourists from the tourist resorts between Cancún and Playa del Carmen can book snorkeling and diving day trips to this cave. They are brought to the cave entrance in a four-wheel drive Unimog, alternatively it may be reached in a 40-minute hike. The participants are dressed in diving suits and equipped with snorkels and optical masks.

The Sistema Nohoch Nah Chich, named after the cenote Nohoch Nah Chich, was the worlds second-largest underwater cave system around 2004, with a length of more than 60 km. When it was connected to Sistema Sac Actun in 2007, the new cave system became the world’s longest underwater cave system. In 2024, it is back on the 4th place, and the 2nd-longest underwater cave system, after two underwater caves were connected (Nohoch Nah Chich, Aktun Hu) forming the Sistema Ox Bel Ha. However, the "longest cave" is an attribute which changes frequently.
