North Macedonia by Region

North Macedonia is a very small country, and it is structured in a changing number of municipalities. It makes no sense to order a dozen sights into 84 municipalities. The lak in a regional structuring was mentioned by others too, and so the country was separated into eight statistical regions, which exist solely for legal and statistical purposes. In other words, they have historical or geographical background, and are neither administrative nor political boundaries. They are only used to do statistics, if you ask a Macedonian citizen in which of this region he lives, he will most likely answer that he never heard about such a thing.

We generally prefer to use geological regions for structuring, which works well when they coincide with geographical differences. The intrinsic connection between both is obvious: different rocks erode differently, forming a different landscape. In this case, this works rather well. The geological units do not end at the North Macedonian border, they extend into neighbouring countries, obviously. There are actually six geological units:

  1. Cukali-Krasta zone (CKZ)
  2. West-Macedonian zone (WMZ)
  3. Pelagonian massif (PM)
  4. Vardar zone (VZ)
  5. Serbo-Macedonian massif (SMM)
  6. Kraishtide zone (KZ)
