29-JUN-2018 | climbing allowed again at the wall by the director of the Tatra National Park. |
Jaskinia Ku Dziurze (Ku Hole Cave) is known for a long time and was visited on a large scale in the first half of the 19th century. According to legend, it was the hideout of Wojtek Mateja, the last Tatra robber. The entrance is 3 m wide and 2 m high, forming a semicircular hole, hence the cliff face above is called Ściany nad Dziurą (Wall over the Hole). The 100 m long and 52 m high limestone cliff is quite popular for rock climbing. There are about 20 climbing routes of II-IV degree on the UIAA (Tatra) difficulty scale. The climbing had been prohibited for some years, but it is again allowed, with restrictions, since 2018.
The cave is a single passage with a second entrance on the other side. But this second entrance is hard to use, because it is a hole in the ceiling, we recommend to return to the entrance. The floor is littered with decaying beech leaves, and the clay and debris make walking in the cave difficult. The cave is a cold trap, and so there are rather spectacular ice formations in winter and spring. Wear appropriate shoes, and bring at least two lamps.
Nearby are two more caves, named Lisia Jama and Dziura Wyżnia, which are both rather difficult and only for cavers.
