The Steiermark (Styria) is located in the southeast of the country. It is bordered to the south by Slovenia, the hill-country along the border is a famous wine growing area. The southeast is lowland, the foothills of the Alps, and named Mittelsteiermark (Central Styria). It is actually separated into two geographical regions named Oststeiermark (Eastern Styria) and Weststeiermark (Western Styria). This is a little weird, as actually Western Styria is located in the south and central part of the country. Because of the similar landscape with hills, valleys, wine and culture, the region is called "Styrian Tuscany".
Graz, the capital, is located at the border to the Alps, and the northeastern part is called Obersteiermark (Upper Styria). It is formed by middle high mountain ridges composed of limestone and karstified. The mountain ranges Stubalpe and Gleinalpe are the border between Upper Styria and Central Styria. The listed site, the caves but also the mines, are located in Upper Styria.
